Dear Freddie Fans,
Because I’m not allowed to go anywhere without a leash I KNOW how to cope. This week I will share what you humans can do. Since I’m Editor-in-Canine-Chief for several blogs I have a trove of posts to share with you. Here’s today’s bit of my wisdom.
Get out of the house. Just remember to keep 6 feet of distance from other people, Find an area where you won’t encounter crowds.
- Garden!
- Pot a plant.
- Repot house plants.
- Weed, mulch, rake & mow.
- Start birdwatching. Coronavirus hasn’t bothered birds. Download a birdwatching map. Sit in your backyard or near a window.
- Take a brisk walk You can still exercise – It helps your immune system be strong.*
- Go on a stroll. Sniff around and clear your mind.
- Sit outside & breathe fresh air. Notice things about the world around you that you didn’t see before.
- Bike ride.
- Meditate, journal, draw in your yard or patio.
Resting after munching the lawn, bird watching, walking and sniffing.
*Exercise which increases immunity and reduces the stress response . . . even if it’s marching in place for 5 minutes without a leash.
Take a 10 minute walk outside – 5 minutes out and 5 minutes back. The colors of nature are also calming to the brain.
There are many exercise video on YouTube that we can watch and follow.

Linda,
Great idea! I used to have exercise CDs to watch, maybe I can find them, too.

If you are inclined to try birding which is a great way to spend time outdoors, there are two free, easy to use apps. One is Merlin which helps you ID birds by answering a few simple questions and the other is BirdsEye which lists places and birds seen in your area. Warning, birding can be addictive.

Rick, You are now officially the Resident Birder for this blog. We’ll check out the links and share them. Warnings will be heeded since, as you know, I’ve been addicted to you since grade school. (that’s just between you and me and if anyone asks I’ll deny it).

Dear Miss Manners. You have been in denial since 1959 as I recall.

Maybe since the womb . . . Having said that, Miss Manners would like you to watch your manners as she is quite sensitive to implied psychological “deficiencies”, real or perceived.

I love bird watching but in my yard, it’s crows, crows, and more crows. Still, lots of great ideas here. It’s possible to socialize with your neighbors if you all hang around outside your own houses and get no closer than 6 feet.

Shari,
I am finding that people who are out walking are very friendly and want to stop and chat–across the street from one another.
